Stability and why it is certain that Gibraltar will remain British
Gibraltar’s sovereignty is assured by the Gibraltar Constitution Order enacted in 1969. It states that Gibraltar’s sovereignty will never be transferred to Spain against the freely and democratically expressed wishes of the people of Gibraltar.
In 1967, a referendum on this matter was held and 12,182 registered Gibraltarians voted to remain British and 44 (or 0.36%) voted in favour of Spain. In 2002 another referendum was held and again, 98.97% voted to remain British.
As long as the Gibraltarians want Gibraltar to remain a UK territory, Gibraltar will never pass its sovereignty to Spain.
